Dear Photomultiplier Doctor,

What are the most important factors in choosing a photomultiplier for scintillation counting?

Mr. Derek Tam Sing
Rapiscan

For scintillation counting it is important to match the light emission spectrum of the scintillator to the spectral response of the photomultiplier. You can download a technical reprint, RP095, on this topic. Long term stability and temperature stability are also important factors.

Choosing a photomultiplier with the appropriate gain is important, and there is a tendency to use a photomultiplier with far too much gain. We have a written procedure involving ten selection steps, in the photomultipler section of this site, that is quite general and applies to all applications. This is also available on page 2 of our photomultplier brochure.

Regards,

Photomultiplier Doctor.
